CONSERVATION EFFORTS
The
LAC is recognized as one of the leading environmental organizations in
Louisiana and works with state and federal agencies to help resolve
environmental problems.
ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION ALERTS

participation.)
The
LAC Conservation Committee has drawn upon on the knowledge of its
members, many who are recognized as experts by the environmental
community and government agencies, to:
-Co-sponsor the first Eco-Summit in Louisiana.
-Coordinate the first EPA/Corps of Engineers round-table on wetlands issues.
-Actively work for the protection of the Atchafalaya Basin.
-Coordinate with other state organizations to protect wetlands.
-Actively work for the protection of the Pearl River Basin.
-Play an instrumental role in securing funding for Louisiana's mercury program.
-Provide expertise to Department of Health and Hospitals on statewide blood
sampling for mercury and on fish/sediment sampling.
-Sponsor two "environmental breakfasts" in New Orleans.
-Actively work for the protection of Kisatchie National Forest.
-Support the protection of Louisiana's National Wildlife Refuges, State Parks, and the
Barataria Unit of the Jean Lafitte National Park.
-Provide public comment on many issues (such as clean water regulations and critical
habitat for endangered species).
-Support the State's Natural and Scenic Rivers Program.
-Hire an advocate to support protection and funding of the non-game program in
Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
-Install bluebird nesting boxes along I-49.
